Volkl Aurora Ski

By , April 13, 2012 1:10 PM

I was a little hesitant when I first tried out this ski on demo day but to my surprise I actually liked it. A bit smaller under foot than what I am used to skiing, this ski could grip an edge like no ones business.

Volkl knew what they were designing when they built the Women’s Aurora Ski. They added the Motion iPT wide ride binding to make this ski top notch. The binding will work in your favor as you power through your turns but you will not have to muscle through your turns. The extended Double Grip construction with steel reinforcements lets you make a powerful turn that your ski will be responsive to. The optimal choice for any one.

The Aurora is built with a sensor wood light core that screams Volkl technology and makes this ski a very lightweight ski. It comes with traditional camber and is built with the torsion box and is made of wood making this an excellent solid all around ski.

The width is 82 under foot giving you some width when you take the Aurora off piste but narrow enough to grip the snow on fast groomers. It has a 132/103 tip and tail giving it a versatile shape for any terrain on the mountain. It comes in a 154cm, 161cm and a 168cm length.

Try out the Volkl Women’s Aurora Ski with Attiva iPT Wide Ride 12.0D binding as your all mountain ski and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Suggested Retail Pricing: $999 with bindings

On Sale: $649.35 with bindings at www.departmentofgoods.com

Jim Jack (1965-2012)

By , February 19, 2012 10:38 PM

Jim JackJim Jack, a beloved friend to many in Alta, and many others around the skiing community died today. He was with a group of skiers and ski journalists (more news on this) at his home mountain, Stevens Pass. The group was in an easily accessible out of bounds area called Seventh Heaven, just a ten minute hike from the chair lift in Tunnel Creek drainage. An avalanche was triggered and carried four members of their party down the mountain. Two others (Chris Rudolph and Johnny Brenan) also lost their lives, and the 4th skier survived by deploying an avalanche air bag.

Of the many, many tributes posted since the accident, perhaps Jessica Baker summed it up best…

Jim Jack, Jimmy Norm Jack, J.J., The man with three first names. My mentor, my dear friend, my ski partner, the dad of all big mountain skiers out there. We will miss you so much. Our tears flow freely tonight as we mourn your passing. So many good memories, so many great ski days together, so many score cards. You are the mayor of Alta, the friendly neighbor, the graceful skier, the nicest guy, and a true friend through and through. We miss you already. Please let your legacy live on through all of us who had the blessing to become your friends!

Jim you were the godfather of big mountain freeskiing, you have been with us through the years. You encouraged young athletes to reach a higher potential and achieve new horizons never imagined. Always a smile on your face and always a word of encouragement from you. We love you and will miss you!!!

Morphic Liberty Ski

By , February 18, 2012 10:55 PM

Morphic Liberty SkiIf you are looking for one ski that can go anywhere on the mountain and ski any condition, the Liberty Morphic Ski should be your choice.

The Morphic Ski is a twin-tip ski with traditional camber. This translates to a great option for all ski conditions. You’ll be able to get an edge on the groomers, glide through the crud and chewed up snow…as well as float in the powder.

The construction is a laminated bamboo and a polar core which makes this ski lightweight but tough at the same time. The bamboo core provides the needed energy and allows it to rebound. You’ll notice the energy and rebound when you are making tight quick turns in a chute. Edge to edge this ski will never disappoint and make those turns effortless.

Designed with a 78-degree sidewall made of UHMW material, the Morphic provides good grip in hard snow when an edge is more than needed. The Quad-axial fiberglass on the top and bottom stabilizes this ski from tip to tail giving it a modern flex for all terrains and conditions.

The Liberty Morphic Ski is new to the 2011-2012 ski line for Liberty. It’s a great choice for skiing Alta or any mountain where you get all types of terrain and conditions. Dimensions are 115-85-110 and come in lengths 164cm, 171cm, 181cm and 186cm.
