Alta Skiing Info
AltaCam is a website that features information on life and powder skiing in Alta, Utah. Although a little behind on the powder, the skiing is still REAL good. We're nearing a 100-inch base and last season we saw 14 feet in 14 days during March! Don't forget to subscribe to the The Daily POW for the latest. (posted February 9, 2010)

Pieps DSP Smart Transmitter & DSP Advanced Avalanche Beacon

Product Group: Avalanche Beacons | Product Added on February 14, 2006, Updated on November 8, 2007

Pieps DSP Avalanche Beacon - Click Here To Check Price & Availability Pieps is one of the most respected names in avalanche safety. So respected, in fact, that the name Pieps has become synonomous with avalanche beacons (similar to how xerox is with copies). This season's DSP beacons are basically unchanged from last season, with only a few tweaks to make them more user friendly. There is a more intuitive button layout that's easier to operate with gloves on and the new beacon comes standard with Pieps' new Smart Probe technology software (which of course you can upgrade to if you have a previous season's beacon).

The Pieps DSP was the first digital avalanche beacon to feature DSP technology (Digital Signal Processing) and a triple-antenna system. This allows the Pieps DSP to determine the number of victims buried and isolate signals, so you can search faster and more efficiently. With a range of 60 meters (roughly 197 feet), the DSP shows how many burials are within 5m, 20m, and 50m. Once the Pieps DSP picks up signals, the approximate distance and direction to the strongest signals are displayed on the large LCD, plus the number of burials within range is represented on the LCD matchstick men. It automatically shows the distance and direction toward the closest signal without interference from the others. When the victim is located, a push of a button marks the signal and begins searching for the next victim. Pieps also had the foresight with these beacons to realize that technology changes every year and its software is easily upgraded as needed, instead of buying a new beacon. The Pieps DSP Advanced Beacon has all the same features as the standard DSP with the bonus of a thermometer, compass, and altimeter built in.
